Flat, Eggshell, Satin or Semi-Gloss? A Room-by-Room Paint Sheen Guide

Sheen is how much light a painted surface reflects. It changes how the color looks, how well the wall hides imperfections and how easy it is to clean. Here is a simple guide.

The main sheens

  • Flat / matte: no shine, hides wall imperfections best, but is the least washable.

  • Eggshell: a soft, low sheen with better washability than flat. A common choice for living areas.

  • Satin: a little more sheen and more durable, good for busy areas.

  • Semi-gloss: noticeably shiny, very durable and easy to wipe down.

  • Gloss: the highest shine, used for specific trim or accent pieces.

Room by room

  • Ceilings: flat, to hide surface flaws and avoid glare.

  • Living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms: flat or eggshell.

  • Hallways and kids' rooms: eggshell or satin for scuff resistance.

  • Kitchens and bathrooms: satin or semi-gloss to handle moisture and cleaning.

  • Trim, doors and cabinets: semi-gloss or satin for durability.

Things to keep in mind

Higher sheens show every dent and patch, so wall prep matters more. Sheen names also vary a bit between product lines, so look at a sample. In Florida's humidity, bathrooms benefit from products made for moisture and mildew resistance.

We help clients choose sheens as part of every interior painting estimate. If you are also thinking about cabinets, read painting vs. replacing kitchen cabinets.
