Choosing Exterior Paint Colors for a Florida Home

A new exterior color can change the whole look of a house. In Florida, color choice also affects how the paint holds up. Here is how to choose with both in mind.

Light colors vs. dark colors

Lighter body colors reflect more heat and generally hold their color longer in full sun. Deep, saturated colors can look great, but they tend to show fading sooner on sun-facing walls, and a dramatic color change may need an extra coat for even coverage. That does not mean avoid bold colors. It means go in with realistic expectations and the right product.

Start with what you cannot change

Your roof, pavers, stone, windows and landscaping are staying. Pick body and trim colors that work with them. A tile roof with warm tones points you toward different choices than a gray metal roof.

Test samples on the house

Colors look different in Florida light than on a small chip indoors. Paint large samples on more than one side of the house and look at them in the morning, at midday and in the evening before you decide.

Body, trim and accent

  • Body: the main wall color.

  • Trim: fascia, window and door trim, often white or a contrasting tone.

  • Accent: front door or shutters, where a stronger color works well.

Check your HOA first

Many communities in Pinellas and Hillsborough have approved color palettes. Get your selection approved before work is scheduled. We work from approved colors and can help coordinate with your association.

Need help deciding?

We are glad to talk through options during your estimate. Older homes in Gulfport and St. Petersburg often carry bold colors well. Mid-century block homes in Kenneth City and Pinellas Park can look completely updated with a new body and trim combination.
